Our Minister

Rev. Bethan Theunissen

Rev. Bethan Theunissen loves to lead communities of faith committed to following Jesus in today’s world.

Born in South Africa, she was one of many working to end apartheid during her early ministry and has since dedicated her life to promoting healthy and just communities where all are valued, respected, and loved.

Rev. Bethan received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Theology from the University of South Africa (UNISA) and her Master of Divinity degree from the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS) in Indiana, USA. She undertook her United Church Testamur studies through the Vancouver School of Theology. Bethan also holds a PhD in Leadership and Organizational Change from the University of San Diego, and received the Dissertation of the Year Award at USD in 2016.

With over 25 years of experience in the United Church of Canada, Rev. Bethan has served as the minister of the Pitt Meadows United Church since 2019. Bethan is committed people to discovering and using their gifts within their homes, families, neighborhoods, work and volunteer organizations. Her compassionate and inclusive approach to ministry reflects the heart of our congregation’s purpose to “Bring hearts together in the Spirit of Christ; sharing God’s love and justice in our neighbourhoods and beyond.” Bethan is convinced that Jesus came that we might all have life, life abundant.  Our task is to wrest from the struggles of our lives this abundant life which is our inheritance as God’s creation.  It is also our task to contribute towards abundant life for all people, everywhere. Bethan is thus also passionate about supporting those who are and feel left out, and she has worked tirelessly to create a safe and inclusive community within her congregation and beyond.

Bethan’s activism and advocacy work has spanned several decades, and she has been a strong voice for peace and justice throughout her career. Through her pastoral work, community initiatives, and advocacy efforts, Rev. Bethan continues to offer a message of love and acceptance, while working towards creating a more loving and just world for all. Bethan’s leadership has had a profound impact on the lives of many.
